Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity

At Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to live. Our mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. We work with families to help them achieve their dream of homeownership by providing affordable housing solutions and teaching them the skills needed to be successful homeowners.

Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity offers several programs and opportunities that might be particularly interesting to high school students:

Volunteer Opportunities
High school students can get involved with Habitat for Humanity by volunteering their time and skills. This can be a great way to earn community service hours, learn new skills, and make a positive impact in the community. Opportunities include:
• Construction: Students can help build homes alongside future homeowners and other volunteers. No previous experience is required, as on-site training is provided.
• ReStore: The ReStore sells donated home goods and building materials to support Habitat's mission. Students can help by organizing merchandise, assisting customers, or participating in donation pickups.
• Special Events: Students can assist with organizing and running fundraising events and community outreach programs (GLHFH) (GLHFH).

Educational Programs
Habitat for Humanity offers educational programs that can be beneficial for students interested in learning more about housing issues and community development. These programs include:
• Financial Literacy Classes: These classes teach important skills like budgeting and managing debt, which are valuable for personal development.
• Homeownership Workshops: These workshops educate future homeowners about the responsibilities and benefits of owning a home (GLHFH).

Advocacy and Awareness
Students can get involved in advocacy work to support affordable housing initiatives. This can involve participating in local advocacy campaigns, attending Habitat's annual legislative conference, or joining efforts to raise awareness about housing issues in the community (GLHFH).

Youth Programs
Habitat for Humanity often runs specific programs aimed at engaging youth in their mission. These programs can include summer camps, youth build days, and leadership development opportunities.

Career and Skill Development
Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity can provide valuable hands-on experience that can be useful for future careers in construction, social work, nonprofit management, and more. Students can also develop soft skills like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving through their involvement (GLHFH).
